Bridge Bar @ GTower

Bridge Bar @ GTower (Malaysia's first certified Green Building) a swanky new place in town is now open. Located at Jalan Ampang on the 28th Floor, the bar is on a glass bridge offering patrons stunning views of KL city skyline. However, to get in you need to be a hotel guest or a member of the club by invitation. The bar's specialty is the Spicy Chili Martini at RM25, Carlsberg is RM22 per bottle and house pouring win is RM23.

Starker @ Overtime

Here we are at Overtime, a bar & restaurant at Sunway Giza, Kota Damansara. This is the second outlet, the first was opened last year at the old Life Center along Jalan Sultan Ismail. Special only at Overtime is their acclaimed freshly brewed beer from Klang, called Starker. 

Starker has 2 flavours - the aromatic flavour (claimed to taste like Hoegaarden) and the slightly stronger flavour.

Happy hour starts from early evening till 7pm. A pint of Starker is RM34.50 nett. Happy hour promotion is buy 1 free 1. They also sell by the barrel and you get 5 pints free during happy hour. Food is served at Overtime, however it is on the pricey side. A basket of french fries will set you back RM8.

Parking is still free at Sunway Giza or there's plenty of road parking - free in the evenings.

Drinkers Verdict

• Starker is an easy to drink beer, not very strong. The taste is fresh as we saw the delivery of new barrel beers coming into the outlet. After 2 pints you can expect to feel pretty happy. However, the price is too high for locally brewed beer. So it is best to come during happy hour. 
• It is also not worthwhile to eat at Overtime, but no worries, there's plenty of eating outlets at Giza - Italian, Japanese, Ipoh chicken rice or around Kota Damansara - just opposite is a mamak, down the road is Hokkien Mee, Thai food, Korean food, Kopitiam and even Vegetarian. 

Santini @ Tropicana City Mall

This place is located on the Ground floor of Tropicana City Mall. It is actually connected to a Thai restaurant so patrons can drink and eat at the same time. There's also a live band every other night till around 1230a.m. They sing chinese songs too (We think they are from Philippines). 

It opens till late and drinks prices are all night long. There are ample parking spaces in the mall and if you come late you might be able to park right in front for free.

The Beer Factory

This place is decent for a good chitchat as the place is not too noisy if you sit outside. Drinks are decent - serves your standard beer list, price of drinks are not exceeding high but not cheap after happy hours. There's an "Apartment" on the first floor where the ambience is more suited for wine drinking. Parking at the Giza is currently still free while they attract more customers to the complex.

Guinness @ Castell

Castell is a place that has been around for a long time. Whilst the food is mostly western style, their steak is suppose to be nice. But we were greatly disappointed when we went there last Wednesday. Their chef was on leave, hence the food was not up to par and most menu options were not available. No chicken for caesar salad, no pies (how hard is it to heat up pie!) and no pastas! So we only ordered starters and salad. The table next to ours ordered mains - which they claim was not good at all. The service was not good either - we had to remind the waiters for our drinks many times, the soup came last after all the other food and one of the waiters was not very friendly.

The only consolation was the Guinness - which tasted pretty good. Happy hour is from 3 - 8pm. Happy hour price for Guinness is rm20 a perfect pint and rm25 for non-happy hour. If you buy 3 pints its rm50.70. Parking is on the streets.

• Likman - this is guinness "kao!" Rating: 3.8 / 5
• Ah Koon - tiger beer is good - i give it a 4. but guinness not enough ooomph - i give it a 3. Beer mugs should not be tall and skinny, a pewter style mug is better.
• CC - thank god for the guinness @ castell. Rating: 3.5 / 5

Don't go when the chef is not around if you want to have your meals here.

Tiger @ Dave's - 1Utama

One of our favourite places is Dave's @ 1Utama Old Wing. The food is nice, the beer is commendable, they have a 2 person live band on fridays and saturdays and there's ample parking at 1Utama mall - what's there not to like!

They have nice pizzas, the carbonara pasta is nice and as an appetizer the asparagus wrap with bacon is yummy!

Happy hour starts from 3-10pm daily. 1 Jug of Tiger is rm35 nett, 1 pint of Guinness is rm21 nett and Heineken is rm13.80/bottle or rm55 nett for a bucket. Patrons are issued beer vouchers for beers ordered during happy hour and you can redeem them throughout the night - Dave's version of the "parking" system.

• Likman - Tiger tastes "good" but the beer mug is not as cold as Club 9. Rating: 4 / 5
• Ah Koon - down with the "red-eye", i had to skip this outing.
• CC - I like a cold n refreshing Tiger after a hot day. Rating: 4 / 5 (I wonder what's up with Ah Koon and his red-eye)

Craft Brews @ Mutiara Damansara

Welcome to Craft Brews an upcoming microbrewery just opened in mid December 2009. They currently don't brew their beer in-house but import their signature home brews from Singapore.

As the place is fairly new, you are able to park by the roadside. Other parking ideas - in Menara Batu Kawan for a fee, Petronas/Burger King parking (grab some fries before heading over for drinks) or Tesco.

Happy hour starts from 5-8pm for draught beers. Hoegaarden happy hour promotion is from 7-10pm. Notice that happy hour rates and normal rates are only a few ringgit cheaper for their pints. The home brews are premium price because it is currently imported from Singapore under RedDot. American bottled beer Flying Dogs and Rogue are also available as well as wines and cocktails.

The bar has a simple and modern touch.

 

This is how beer is brewed. Hopefully the owners will get their license and officially house brew interesting beers.

"Siew Yoke" aka Roast Pork is on the menu! They have spicy and non-spicy, its a little sweet and nicely made with dark sauce (should go very nice with rice but its a western restaurant so no rice here). Their eggplant crisps was not crispy, it just tasted like a eggplant fried with garlic (this needs improvement). The dory fish was decent enough.

Monster Green Lager 

• Likman - Doesn't look and taste like beer. Rating: 2.5 / 5
• Ah Koon - "A drink for Hulk". Besides the colour, nothing interesting. Rating: 2 / 5
• CC - Very light "healthy" beer. Rating: 2.5 / 5

Czech Pilsner

We ordered a tower which serves 7 pints. The manager, Sam, allowed us to "park" our drinks, very nice of him to accommodate us. Kudos Sam, keep up the nice work.

• Likman - Like the gold colour, easy to drink although not much kick at its first instance. Rating: 3.8 / 5
• Ah Koon - Very refreshing and beer taste fresh. Slightly better than Carlsberg. Rating: 4 / 5
• CC - Nice, medium taste. Rating: 4 / 5

"Old Scratch" Amber Lager

• Likman - I like the after scent on my tastebuds. Rating: 4.2 / 5
• Ah Koon - "Fantastic"! The taste plays around your tongue. Rating: 4.2 / 5 
• CC - Very full taste, surprisingly nice! Rating: 4.5 / 5

In-Heat Wheat Hefeweizen

• Likman - I wish this comes in a tower, better than "Old Scratch". Rating: 4.3 / 5
• Ah Koon - Doesn't have a longer lasting taste in my mouth compare to "Old Scratch". Rating: 3.8 / 5
• CC - Has a lingering fruity and flowery taste - like first love! Rating: 4.3 / 5

Snake Dog Ipa India Pale Ale

• Likman - Flowery beer, smells like spring! Rating: 4.25 / 5
• Ah Koon - A bit too strong, taste good, one bottle is enough to be happy. Rating: 3.7 / 5
• CC - Taste like durian for some reason. Rating: 4 / 5
  

Overall Rating: 4 / 5

Bottled drinks are good. They should come in buckets or towers. If you are planning to stay the whole night, Czech Pilsner is good as the taste gets better as the night sets in.
